OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Golden State Warriors have granted permission to the Los Angeles Lakers to interview Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton for their coaching vacancy.

Steve Kerr, who was named the NBA Coach of the Year on Tuesday, revealed before Wednesday night's series-clinching Game 5 win over the Houston Rockets that the Lakers can meet with Walton as soon as a break in the Warriors' schedule arises.

"We told Mitch that he's perfectly welcome to talk to Luke as soon as the series is over and we have a little break," Kerr said of Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak.

NBA coaching sources say Walton, after spending eight-plus seasons as a player with the Lakers, is a prime target for Los Angeles in its search to replace Byron Scott, who was fired Sunday night after posting a 38-126 record over the past two seasons.

Yet sources stressed to ESPN.com that San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Ettore Messina is also getting strong consideration. Messina had a decorated coaching career in Europe before serving as a Lakers consultant in 2011-12. Not only is he a known entity to Lakers officials, but he also has spent the past two seasons alongside Hall of Fame-bound San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

The Lakers, sources say, are seeking a coach who can change their on-court fortunes, connect with their many young players and help their free-agent recruiting efforts. Team officials, however, have made it clear that they are not prepared to grant full personnel control to whomever they hire. That policy applied in Los Angeles even when Phil Jackson was on the bench.

Sources say the Lakers also plan to interview former Cleveland Cavaliers

Nick Young is a lot of things. He's a shooting guard who averaged 7.3 points per game for the Los Angeles Lakers this past season. He's a player who likes to celebrate, sometimes a bit too early. And, outside of basketball circles, he's the fiancé of rapper Iggy Azalea. And thanks to her, Young avoided what would've been a highly embarrassing tattoo blunder, because for all the things Nick Young is, a good speller he is not. We'll let Iggy tell the tale:

She's right, Young is definitely lucky she's around to catch mistakes like this. As for the misspelling of his own nickname in his Twitter handle ("Swaggy P" should have two g's), he gets a pass on that one: Twitter only supports handles up to 15 characters, and @NickSwaggyPYoung would be 16.

Los Angeles LakersThe Lakers are auctioning the No. 8 section of the Staples Center hardwood court they installed prior to Kobe Bryant's last game on April 13.

Before Kobe Bryant's last game April 13, the Los Angeles Lakers installed two new hardwood sections on the court, one with the number 8 and one with the number 24, the two numbers Bryant wore for the team in his 20-year career.

On Wednesday, the team announced that it would be auctioning off the No. 8 section from that game, in which Bryant scored 60 points.

The floor piece, which measures 20 feet by 8 feet, is signed by Bryant, and the proceeds will benefit the team's charity, the Los Angeles Lakers youth foundation.

The auction began at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday and closes May 15. The current high bid is $12,100.

Lakers get permission to interview Spurs assistant Ettore Messina: The man has seemingly accomplished everything in basketball. Ettore Messina has coached countless championship teams. Plenty consider him to have one of the most intelligent minds in the sports. Yet, Messina still has not become an NBA head coach. Perhaps his chance has come. The Lakers recently received permission from the San Antonio Spurs to interview Messina for their vacant head-coaching position, this newspaper has confirmed. -- Los Angeles Daily News

Could Kevin Durant’s future be impacted if good friend Derek Fisher is hired?: Derek Fisher is a long-shot candidate to end up in Los Angeles coaching the Lakers and will need the support of everyone from Kobe Bryant to Magic Johnson to enhance his candidacy. But Fisher, along with UConn head coach Kevin Ollie, has the support of two players that mean more to the Lakers future than Kobe and Magic. Fisher, according to a source, is hoping that his connections to Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook will make him more attractive to the Lakers, who have missed out on key free agents the past few summers. -- New York Daily News
