The Miami Dolphins are having a rough go with their general manager search. The pool of candidates are either dropping out or taking jobs with other teams, leaving the Dolphins down to their alternate choices. A big reason is questions about their power structure.
Should the Dolphins simply promote assistant GM Brian Gaine and call it a day? Gaine is currently the acting GM. He went to the Senior Bowl this week and internally knows the current power structure with head coach Joe Philbin and vice president of football administration Dawn Aponte. Hiring Gaine may also make it easier to completely start over in 2015 if things don’t go well.
What about Lake Dawson of the Tennessee Titans? Dawson is going back for his second interview in Miami. He wasn’t considered Miami’s top choice. But Ray Farmer’s recent change of heart moves Dawson up the list.
Will the Dolphins hire Dennis Hickey of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? He was a late add to Miami’s list. Hickey didn’t have much success in the front office of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he’s still in the running in Miami.
Finally, should the Dolphins keep interviewing candidates? Miami’s current list isn’t all that impressive. Maybe the Dolphins can find someone from recently eliminated playoff teams. But time is running short with the NFL combine approaching and free agency looming.
