Dolphins, GM Hickey make statement
By James Walker
The Miami Dolphins finally announced the hiring of new general manager Dennis Hickey this evening. Word got out on the hire earlier this morning after two candidates -- Nick Caserio of New England and Lake Dawson of Tennessee -- turned down the job in the past 24 hours.
Both Hickey and Dolphins owner Stephen Ross made a statement on the hire.
“I am excited that Dennis Hickey is our new General Manager,” Ross said. “When we started the search, I outlined qualities that I was looking for in this position. These included a collaborative team-first person who can work with [coach] Joe [Philbin], demonstrated player evaluation expertise, and someone who is open-minded and creative. Dennis fit all of these criteria and I'm looking forward to having him get started.”
Added Hickey: “Miami is a great franchise with a historic tradition and passionate fans. The opportunity to work with Stephen Ross, Joe Philbin and the entire Dolphins organization to build a team that wins on a consistent basis is exciting.”
The Dolphins made a point to mention in the release that both Hickey and Philbin will report directly to Ross, with none above the other. Miami’s questionable structure has been a hot topic in NFL circles since the firing of former GM Jeff Ireland.
