No decision on Week 12 QB, Frazier says

By Ben Goessling

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- At this point, it's practically become a weekly ritual for Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier to stand up at his Monday news conference and announce he will have no announcement about the team's starting quarterback until later in the week. That ritual, it appears, will continue before the Vikings' Week 12 game against the Green Bay Packers.

(Hey, at least it's good for a little suspense in a 2-8 season!)

Frazier said on Monday he'd meet with his coaches and go over the Vikings' quarterback options again, but as we discussed yesterday, it might say plenty about Josh Freeman's future with this team if the Vikings won't turn to him during the final stretch of a lost season. Frazier said all three of the Vikings' quarterbacks -- Freeman, Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel -- are healthy enough to play, and while the Vikings continue to work with Freeman on his footwork, Frazier said "that hasn't been the determining factor to why he's not in the starting lineup."

My guess is, Frazier has felt like Ponder's done enough in recent weeks not to force a change at the position, especially while the Vikings still technically had a shot at a winning record. But now that the team is 2-8 and Ponder is coming off a game where he was pulled following two puzzling interceptions, the Vikings wouldn't seem to be risking much by putting Freeman on the field.

Asked if he needs to see something from Freeman to win the job, Frazier said, "Not so much from Josh. [We'll] just try and determine what’s the best thing to do based on where we are and what we’re trying to get accomplished. He’s doing everything we’re asking him to do, he’s working hard in practice, he’s preparing properly. We’ll just have to see what’s the best thing to do."
