Why Texas will defeat BYU: The Longhorns are too angry to lose this one. Last season's 40-21 beatdown by BYU was a frequent source of offseason motivation for a Texas team that got embarrassed in Provo, Utah. Despite this week's challenging circumstances, the Horns still have a potentially elite defense and a terrific running back duo. As for the quarterback, Tyrone Swoopes will be pressured and he'll have to make the easy throws as well as the tough third-down ones, but Texas is simplifying the game plan and just needs him to be a game manager. His teammates will rally around him and find ways to slow down Taysom Hill and that deadly BYU run game. -- Max Olson

Why BYU will defeat Texas: The Longhorns can be angry all they want. The fact is, Texas isn't the same team without injured quarterback David Ash on the field. Texas will try to rely on its rushing attack early, but eventually Swoopes will have to make plays in the passing game with his arm. After watching him in Texas' spring game, I'm skeptical. I'm far more confident in BYU's Hill, who was sharp again in the Cougars' opener with 308 yards passing, 97 yards rushing and five total touchdowns. -- Jake Trotter

Why Kansas State will defeat Iowa State (consensus pick): Did you see Iowa State against North Dakota State? Kansas State should have no problem if that same Cyclones squad shows up in Week 2. And even if a much-improved ISU team shows up Saturday, Jake Waters and Tyler Lockett are a handful for any team, and the Wildcats have a quiet confidence that could carry them a long way in 2014. -- Brandon Chatmon

More consensus picks: Oklahoma over Tulsa; Oklahoma State over Missouri State; Kansas over Southeast Missouri State; West Virginia over Towson; Baylor over Northwestern State; Texas Tech over UTEP
