1. No. 6 Iowa hasn’t won at Michigan State since 1995, and No. 13 Penn State hasn’t won at Michigan since 1996. If the Hawkeyes and the Nittany Lions can’t break their losing streaks in the state on Saturday, the Big Ten race will need Windows 7 to figure out who’s in and who’s out. The Spartans have a tough order, based on ball security alone. They are minus-4 in turnover margin. The Hawkeyes are plus-11.

2. Ole Miss didn’t dump the Confederate flag until1997, closing the barn door after the recruits got out. Now the university wants to stop the students from singing “The South Will Rise Again” as a refrain to a school fight song. My objection to the phrase has nothing to do with race. “The South Will Rise Again” says nothing about winning a football game. The student government’s suggested replacement: “To Hell With LSU.” That’s a refrain that will win some games.

3. After a week of mourning teammate Jasper Howard, who was murdered on campus last weekend, UConn goes to West Virginia, a team the Huskies are 0-5 against in Big East play. It may be that UConn rides ride a wave of emotion to beating the No. 23 Mountaineers. The hard part of healing will come as the emotion subsides. Head coach Randy Edsall has been pitch-perfect in dealing with the tragedy. It may get only more difficult as the season goes on.
