Six coaches from the nonautomatic qualifying schools have been named semifinalists for the Paul “Bear” Bryant College Football Coach of the Year Award, which is handed out annually to the nation’s best coach.
Idaho’s Robb Akey, Temple’s Al Golden, BYU’s Bronco Mendenhall, TCU’s Gary Patterson, Boise State’s Chris Petersen and Houston’s Kevin Sumlin all received recognition for the stellar seasons their teams are having. There are 20 total coaches on the list.
These non-AQ coaches have combined for a 37-7 record so far this season and none have lost more than two games. Both Patterson and Petersen are undefeated this year, and, along with Sumlin, are ranked in the current BCS standings.
The finalists for the Bear Bryant Award will be announced in December and will attend an awards dinner in Houston on Jan. 14, 2010. The winner will be announced live that evening. The winner is voted on by members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and is the only college coaching award voted on after all bowl games are played.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham won the award last season after his team finished the season 13-0, including a win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
