Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews could be playing his final five games in a Bulldogs uniform.
The Fresno Bee is reporting that coach Pat Hill has agreed to seek NFL evaluations for Mathews so he can determine whether to forgo his senior season for the NFL Draft.
"We talked about it, and [Hill] is going to get evaluations on me and if I'm going to go in the top couple rounds, he's going to tell me to go because it's good money," Mathews told the Bee. "But if not, I'll just play here another year and have fun."
Mathews has rushed for 1,131 yards and nine touchdowns this season. His 161.57 yards per game leads the nation and he has yet to rush for fewer than 100 yards in any games this year; that includes a 233-yard showing against No. 10 Boise State and a 145-yard performance against No. 14 Cinicinnati in back-to-back games.
Hill said he likely wouldn’t be able to get any evaluations on Mathews until after the season and Mathews said he wouldn’t make his decision until then anyway.
"If he's in position to make good money and have an opportunity to be drafted in the top 30-40 picks, I think it's in his best interest to look at that option," Hill said Monday.
Mathews is in the midst of his first full healthy season with the Bulldogs. He missed some time his freshman season with an array of injuries and then suffered nerve damage last season, which limited him to just eight of the Bulldogs 13 games.
