1. Ohio State linebacker Rob Reynolds went after Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi’s throat in 2003 and got suspended for a game. Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes started poking inside the face mask of Georgia tailback Washaun Ealey on Saturday and got suspended for a half by Gators coach Urban Meyer. Seems a tad soft. SEC commissioner Mike Slive OKs it. It’s a good thing that Spikes didn’t say a word about the officiating.

2. There’s gouging, and there’s choking -- up. You can’t read about Ole Miss freshman running back Rodney Scott’s actions Saturday without getting a football-sized lump in your throat. Scott landed beneath Auburn safety Zac Etheridge. When it became clear Etheridge couldn’t move, Scott didn’t, either. He remained motionless until paramedics secured Etheridge. The Auburn safety is O.K. Somewhere, former Rebel safety Chucky Mullins is smiling.

3. Iowa put out a release illustrating how tough its schedule has been compared to Boise State, TCU, Cincinnati and Oregon. Methinks the Hawkeyes doth protest too much. They’re fourth in the BCS, second in the computers. Yes, the human polls have Iowa too low. Here’s the solution: keep winning. If Iowa doesn’t win out, the lobbying won’t matter. Besides, Iowa needs to overtake Texas, not those other guys.
