1. Sending Ohio State coach Jim Tressel into a game without his kicker is like depriving Tiger Woods of his putter. Tresselball relies on field position and the kicking game, and senior Aaron Pettrey, now out with a knee injury, has been dependable from long range. The Buckeyes go to their Big Ten elimination game at Penn State without a proven kicker and with an offense whose red zone efficiency (27-37, .730) is next-to-last in the Big Ten.

2. Mickey Andrews has produced great defensive backs in his 25 years as the Florida State defensive coordinator. Deion Sanders, LeRoy Butler, Terrell Buckley, Corey Sawyer, Clifton Abraham, Tay Cody all made All-American (as did eight other defenders) under the tutelage of the always hoarse, always sarcastic, always big-hearted Andrews. It has been tough to watch the Seminoles play such bad defense this year. Andrews’ legacy will overcome that with ease.

3. Southmoore (Okla.) High junior quarterback Kendal Thompson committed to sign with Oklahoma on Monday. He is the son of Charles Thompson, the quarterback whose arrest and conviction for selling cocaine helped bring an end to the Barry Switzer Era in Norman 20 years ago. By all accounts, Charles Thompson has reformed, and his son is an upstanding young man. But it is a little odd, no?
