1. Clemson ranks 11th in the nation in pass efficiency defense. That’s impressive considering that Florida State will be the Tigers’ fourth opponent among the top 14 in passing efficiency. Clemson lost to Georgia Tech by three, TCU by four and beat Miami in overtime. The Tigers get no break against the Seminoles. Quarterback Christian Ponder, who rested his sore ribs for two days, worked with the first team in practice Wednesday.

2. I called out Florida coach Urban Meyer for going easy on linebacker Brandon Spikes. But now I’m defending Meyer. Saying a penalty should have been called, as he did Wednesday on the SEC teleconference in reference to Georgia linebacker Nick Williams' leveling of Gator quarterback Tim Tebow, shouldn’t rise to the level of punishable criticism. If it does, then we’ve learned that SEC commissioner Mike Slive has thinner skin than Meyer. And that’s saying something.

3. You have to hand it to Georgia coach Mark Richt. You have to be some kind of coach to have a team that’s minus-15 in turnover margin and still be 4-4. And there’s no sarcasm intended. Well, OK, not much. The Bulldogs have only six takeaways, including one fumble recovery. One! They have given up the ball 21 times. How can you do that and have a .500 record?
