Not much went right for Notre Dame this weekend, but at least the Irish had some encouraging news on the injury front.

Backup quarterback Dayne Crist's ACL surgery went better than expected, head coach Charlie Weis said Sunday, because doctors found little ancillary damage in the knee. That should mean that Crist can return quickly from the injury and possibly be ready for spring practice. Junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen may leave for the NFL this season, and Crist is the only scholarship quarterback who will be returning.

Tight end Kyle Rudolph left the Navy game in the first half and returned to the sidelines with his arm in a sling. Weis said he had feared Rudolph broke his collarbone, the same injury that put receiver Michael Floyd out for more than a month. But Weis said Sunday that X-rays were negative on Rudolph.

Weis wasn't sure how bad Rudolph's left shoulder was hurt or what his availability would be for Pittsburgh. An update on his status will likely come at Weis's next news conference on Tuesday afternoon.
