Ohio is not going to let Temple run away with the Mid-American Conference East title.

Bobcats kicker Matt Weller hit a 47-yard field goal with 1:25 remaining to earn a 27-24 victory over Buffalo on Tuesday night. The Bobcats continue to nip at the heels of the Owls, who play Akron on Friday.

The loss knocked Buffalo out of bowl contention.

Ohio’s quest for a MAC East title doesn’t get easier from here. The Bobcats already have played one more game than Temple, but have the same amount of wins. They also have two tough games against Northern Illinois and the Owls to close out the season.

Ohio will go to a bowl regardless, but it needs some fortuitous things to happen to make winning the East possible.

"Every game counts," Ohio coach Frank Solich said this week. "Right now we're in position to get some things done. We've got to play great football and we have to beat three very good football teams. Our last three games are maybe the toughest three in conference play.”

Tonight and Thursday, the MAC West takes its turn in the survival pool. Central Michigan, which has led the MAC West all season, play its first MAC game since getting crushed by Boston College two weeks ago.
"I am curious to see how our guys are going to respond," Central Michigan coach Butch Jones told the Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun. "We have had great senior leadership all year and I think our guys know all that is still at stake for us. We were beaten by a good football team in Boston College, but we have all of our goals still in front of us."
The Chippewas host Toledo, a team they’ve beaten the past four seasons, and a win they desperately need to keep a comfortable lead from Northern Illinois.

The Huskies play Ball State, which was long ago eliminated from repeating as the MAC West champ. The Huskies have won three straight and are a game back of Central Michigan. Similar to the Chippewas, the Huskies control their own destiny. With Central Michigan and Northern Illinois meeting at the end of the season, whichever team wins out will win the West.
