Coach Frank Solich said it would take a tremendous effort to defeat Temple -- a team that had won nine consecutive games -- and that’s exactly what Solich got from his Bobcats.
Quarterback Theo Scott, who had struggled at times during the season, had a career game, completing 80.9 percent of his passes for 324 yards and three scores and rushed for 69 yards and two scores to lead the Bobcats to a 35-17 win, the MAC East title and a berth in the MAC championship game.
The Bobcats will play Central Michigan in Detroit next week in a rematch of the 2006 title game, which Central Michigan won 31-10.
It’s the second straight game in which Scott, a senior who started the entire year for the first time in his career, played flawlessly and helped lead his team to a key win. Scott threw three touchdowns against Northern Illinois last week in a game the Bobcats had to win to even be in a position to challenge for the East Division.
Scott did not throw an interception in his last two games, the first time he’d gone without a passing turnover since the beginning of October.
Ohio fought to even make Friday’s game important.
It lost to Kent State on Oct. 24, to put it a game behind the Owls. As Temple kept winning, the Bobcats had to keep pace. In the two games following the Kent State loss, Ohio won both games by three points on late scores. It beat Northern Illinois by a touchdown.
The 35 points Ohio scored on Friday was the most Temple has allowed all season. The 18-point margin of victory is the second-largest by Ohio this season and the best since beating Miami-Ohio 28-7.
