Notre Dame has officially announced that Charlie Weis has been fired, which comes as no surprise to anyone.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the announcement is that Rob Ianello, the Irish's assistant head coach, wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, is now in charge of the program on an interim basis.

Ianello has done a great job with the receivers -- just look at what Golden Tate and Michael Floyd accomplished this season for proof. He is also highly respected as a recruiter.

While Notre Dame's players are expected to vote this afternoon on whether they want to play in a bowl game, and ultimately that call will be up to athletic director Jack Swarbrick, Ianello could serve as the interim coach in any postseason contest. Especially if the Irish play in an early bowl game and/or have to wait on another coach, like Cincinnati's Brian Kelly, to finish out his bowl duties.

Either way, whoever the next coach is would be wise to strongly consider keeping Ianello around on the staff.
