1. Speculation over the next Kansas coach will start with UConn coach Randy Edsall until he knocks it down. Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins held that job at UConn for 13 years. He hired Edsall in 1999 to shepherd the Huskies in their transition from FCS to FBS. Edsall’s record of 60-58 is misleading. In the past seven seasons, six of them in the Big East, UConn is 49-35 (.583). The big question: Can Edsall cut ties with his Huskies after the tragic death of Jasper Howard?
2. First-year head coach Chip Kelly led Oregon to the Rose Bowl. But the 37-33 victory over Oregon State also put an emotional bow on Kelly’s handling of senior tailback LeGarrette Blount. The back who ended the season-opening loss as a pariah, bailed out the Ducks by scoring on a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that brought Oregon within two points, 30-28. Blount finished with 61 yards on nine carries. He also started his career anew.
3. Few head coaching jobs have come open in this hiring season. What’s been interesting is the lack of speculation about former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer and former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. Fulmer won a national championship in 1998. Tuberville led the Tigers to a 12-0 season in 2004. Yet the only nibble that I’m aware is that Virginia has expressed interest in talking to Tuberville. Recycling is no longer the rage in coaching.
