Cincinnati has asked and received permission from Houston to interview head coach Kevin Sumlin for its recently vacated head-coaching position.
Brian Kelly resigned today after accepting a position at Notre Dame.
No date has been set for the interview.
Sumlin, who is in his second season with the Cougars, was the only coach to lead his team to three nonconference wins over automatic-qualifying teams. The Cougars finished the regular season 10-3 with wins over then-No. 5 Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Mississippi State, won Conference USA’s West Division and played in the C-USA title game. Houston earned its first national ranking since 1991 and the Cougars led the country in total offense. Houston quarterback Case Keenum led the country in passing and total offense and was a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award.
Houston will play Air Force in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 31.
Sumlin is 18-8 in two seasons with the Cougars.
Earlier this week, the Houston Chronicle reported that Houston athletic director Mack Rhoades was negotiating a contract extension with Sumlin and that the deal was close to done.
