Boise State coach Chris Petersen became the first two-time winner of the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award when he was named the winner Thursday evening.

The honor recognizes the nation’s best collegiate coach.

Boise State finished the season 14-0 and ranked No. 4 in both the Associated Press and coaches' polls. Petersen is 49-4 during his four seasons with the Broncos and has won two Fiesta Bowl titles.

Petersen won the Bear Bryant Award after the 2006 season as well.

"It's an honor for our program," Petersen said during the awards ceremony Thursday. "Every time Boise State's name is mentioned with these other universities and these coaches, it's really overwhelming. We're just so appreciative for the opportunity to be here."

Petersen beat out Alabama coach Nick Saban, whose Crimson Tide won the national title. Texas coach Mack Brown, Georgia Tech's Paul Johnson, Stanford's Jim Harbaugh, Oregon's Chip Kelly and Houston's Kevin Sumlin also were finalists.

Non-AQ coaches have won 10 national coaching awards this season. TCU coach Gary Patterson picked up his ninth award earlier this week when he was named the American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
