Utah running back Matt Asiata has received a sixth year of eligibility, the university confirmed.
Asiata missed the 2007 season after breaking his leg during the first game of the season at Oregon State and suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter against Louisville in 2009.
Asiata, a transfer from Snow College, was an All-American candidate heading into the 2009 season after rushing for a team-high 707 yards and 12 touchdowns in split time on Utah’s undefeated team in 2008. And he was on a good pace with 330 yards and four touchdowns before he was injured early in the fourth game of 2009.
Coach Kyle Whittingham said Asiata would not participate in spring football, which begins March 9. Whittingham also said he didn’t want to speculate about Asiata’s role with the team until he was back practicing, and that the decision about the running game probably wouldn’t be made until the fall.
