Fresno State assistant John Baxter is leaving to become USC’s special teams coordinator, a source told ESPN The Magazine’s Bruce Feldman.

During his 12 seasons with the Bulldogs, Baxter oversaw special teams and tight ends. Since 2002, the Bulldogs have blocked a nation-best 49 kicks, including five last season.

But more importantly, Baxter is the author of Fresno State’s “Academic Gameplan," which has made the Bulldogs one of the most academically sound football programs in the country. Fresno State has produced a league-best 141 Academic All-WAC football players, including a school-high 18 this past semester. To earn that honor, athletes had to have completed at least one academic year, with a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA and play in at least 50 percent of a team's games.

Fresno State has not yet announced plans to replace Baxter.
