All week I’ve been looking at some of the top transfers from AQ to non-AQ schools. I already looked at the top quarterback and the top running back transfers and now it’s time to conclude the series with the top wide receivers to watch in non-AQ camps this spring a fall.
Here are my top wide receiver transfers from AQ programs:
Jermaine McKenzie, Memphis: McKenzie transferred from Miami last season and tried to get a waiver form the NCAA to play immediately. That venture failed, but McKenzie enters this season with an opportunity especially since the Tigers lost their top two receivers and are learning a new coach. McKenzie played in three games as a redshirt freshman at Miami, but didn’t record a catch. He'll have a big opportunity to impress with a new coaching staff.
Tim Molton, Louisiana Tech: It’s hard to say how Molton will fit in since he redshirted his first season with LSU and then strained his knee during the 2009 offseason before deciding to transfer to Tech. However, the Bulldogs need as many offensive weapons as it can get to run a spread system similar to Texas Tech’s. Molton was a three-sport athlete in high school and that athleticism will come in handy this spring.
Tyler Stradford, North Texas: Stradford, a transfer from Oklahoma, enters a unique situation at North Texas because the Mean Green returns their top six receivers from a year ago. But the Mean Green like to spread the ball around, which will give a lot of receivers a chance to get catches, and Stradford impressed while working with the scout team last year. He should be able to give the Mean Green another top receiving option.
Ahmad Paige, Louisiana Tech: Paige is one of two Tennessee transfers (running back Lennon Creer) and yet another receiver transfer that doesn’t have a dramatic body of work. Paige redshirted at Tennessee in 2007 and played sparingly in 2008. However, he was a two-time high school all-state player in Louisiana after amassing 2,071 receiving yards in his final two seasons. Like Molton, Paige has the benefit of a new coaching staff that’s looking for playmakers. So what they’ve done (or haven’t done) it the past won’t really matter.
