1. The latest example of FBS economics run amok would seem to come from the HBO report to air Tuesday night that says USC is paying Lane Kiffin $4 million annually after his 7-6 season at Tennessee. But if you at view it by salary per annual victory, USC doesn’t measure up to Auburn, which agreed to pay $1.9 million annually to Gene Chizik after he went 3-9 and 2-10 at Iowa State. At least the Tigers went 8-5 last season. USC made Chizik look like a bargain.
2. If the report of Notre Dame and Miami agreeing to a three-game series -- home-and-home preceded by a “neutral” game at Soldier Field -- is correct, you have to tip your cap to the Fighting Irish. The more they tread water on the football field, the more they flex their marketplace muscle off of it. You would think that a revival of a great rivalry would treat each side equally. Miami must want either the exposure or the money to agree to this deal.
3. Never have spring conference meetings been covered so closely. Never have so many journalists asked so many questions of so many administrators who have so few answers to give. Expansion is a story that hasn’t happened yet. It’s going to be this way for at least the next two weeks, until the SEC meets. It will continue in late July when league previews begin. If Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany sticks to his 12- to 18-month timetable, there won’t be answers then, either.
