Three-point stance: No Pac-10 divisions?

1. Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott told the San Jose Mercury News that when the league expands to 12 teams, it may not split into divisions for the 2011 season. How do you split that league into two sets of six in a way that makes geographic sense and maintains competitive balance? Will the league make sure, as is now the case, that every member plays in the recruiting hotbed of Los Angeles every season? The solution, whatever it is, will be a study in compromise.

2. Coaches say the hardest position to recruit is the defensive line. When you add up all of the droughts Notre Dame is suffering, such as 22 years without a national championship or17 years without winning a Jan. 1 bowl, think about this one. The Irish have had one defensive linemen taken in the first round of the NFL draft since 1994: that was Renaldo Wynn, selected by Jacksonville in 1997.

3. The Manning family of quarterbacks -- dad Archie and sons Peyton and Eli -- hold a camp for quarterbacks every summer in Louisiana. The Mannings invite the top college quarterbacks to work as counselors. When camp convenes in July, missing from the class of counselors will be Ryan Mallett of Arkansas (surgery) and Jake Locker of Washington. At least two former campers, Christian Ponder of Florida State and Andrew Luck of Stanford, are returning as counselors.
