1.Gone but not forgotten -- USC coach Lane Kiffin, who had a tumultuous 14 months at Tennessee, took a couple of veiled shots Wednesday at SEC Media Days. Commissioner Mike Slive said, “Derek Dooley’s predecessor left to return to his western roots. I want to welcome Coach Dooley back to the SEC. And when I say welcome, I mean welcome." Florida coach Urban Meyer described Dooley as “a high-character guy.” Then he added, “It’s kind of nice to see that.”
2.Some college coaches, such as Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech, already have thrown NFL scouts off their campus. If the scouts want to look at potential Hokie draftees, they have to go to their opponents to see game video. The NFL has worked around Beamer. But if every college coach bans the NFL, that solution won’t work. Does the American Football Coaches Association take a stand? Or will the passion shown this week fizzle before the group’s January meeting?
3.Bobby Bowden grew up an Alabama fan. When Florida State played Alabama in Jacksonville in 2007, Bowden, a Birmingham native, told me that when he retired, he wanted to attend a game a Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama athletic director Mal Moore told me that Bowden has accepted an invitation to the Crimson Tide’s game on Sept. 11 against Penn State. Bowden will see his childhood team play against the team of his old friend and competitor, Joe Paterno. Very cool.
