Top non-AQ quarterback battles, Part II

We continue our look at ongoing quarterback battles, in the MAC and Sun Belt.

MAC

Buffalo

Between: Jerry Davis and Alex Dennison.

Who has the edge: New coach Jeff Quinn is installed a spread offense and has narrowed the field to Davis and Dennison. Davis has some playing experience, having served as the backup to Zach Maynard last season. Dennison is a redshirt freshman. Davis should have the edge.

When will we know: No timetable for an announcement.

Central Michigan

Between: Ryan Radcliff, Derek Rifenbury and Brandon Fricke.

Who has the edge: Radcliff is all but guaranteed to start in the season opener Sept. 2 against Hampton, having emerged as the leader throughout the spring and fall.

When will we know: Just before Sept. 2.

Eastern Michigan

Between: Devontae Payne and Alex Gillett.

Who has the edge: Gillett may have a slight edge only because he played last season and started the final three games. Payne is athletically gifted. Expect to see both play this season.

When will we know: No timetable for an announcement.

Ohio

Between: Boo Jackson and Phil Bates.

Who has the edge: Boo Jackson went into last season as the starter but got hurt and received a medical redshirt. He is now in a battle with Iowa State transfer Phil Bates. Jackson has the experience, while Bates is more of a dual-threat quarterback. Both are expected to play this season.

When will we know: A decision isn’t expected until the season opener.

Toledo

Between: Austin Dantin and Terrance Owens.

Who has the edge: Dantin played last season as a true freshman and made several starts, completing 66 percent of his passes and throwing for 962 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. It would be a major shock if he isn’t announced as the starter.

When will we know: Coach Tim Beckman doesn’t plan on making an official announcement until next week.

Sun Belt

Arkansas State

Between: Ryan Aplin and Phillip Butterfield.

Who has the edge: Too close to call. Aplin played last season as a redshirt freshman, while Butterfield was out for the season with a knee injury. Aplin missed the spring after shoulder surgery. Both have played up and down during fall camp while trying to learn the new no-huddle offense.

When will we know: Coach Steve Roberts isn’t ready to name a starter yet.

FIU

Between: Wesley Carroll and Wayne Younger.

Who has the edge: Carroll had a good start to his career at Mississippi State before transferring to FIU. Younger was the backup last season, throwing no touchdowns to four interceptions. Carroll has looked sharp during scrimmages.

When will we know: The week of Sept. 11, when FIU opens the season against Rutgers.

Troy

Between: Jamie Hampton and Corey Robinson.

Who has the edge: Too close to call. After the team’s second scrimmage this past weekend, coach Larry Blakeney was no closer to making a decision, and conceded both could play in the opener Sept. 4 against Bowling Green. Hampton has game experience, having started five games in 2008 before getting hurt, while Robinson is a redshirt freshman. As for their skills, Hampton is a better runner while Robinson is a better passer.

When will we know: No timetable.
