UCF quarterback Rob Calabrese is out for the season with a torn ACL, confirming the fears coach George O'Leary had after his former starter got hurt last week.

Calabrese was not hit when he got hurt, following a short touchdown run last Wednesday against Marshall. He began the season as a starter, but played in a reserve role behind freshman Jeffrey Godfrey. Calabrese had been getting reps in a Wildcat package, and O'Leary liked having his veteran player spell Godfrey for a few plays in the game.

With Calabrese out, Stanford transfer L.D. Crow becomes the backup. Redshirt freshman Nico Flores could see some time in the Wildcat formation.

"It’s a shame because he was really doing some good things for us out there," O'Leary said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. "You can’t get a redshirt year back on him because it’s the sixth game.

“You know he’ll still be involved with the team and meetings and stuff like that. I think he’s a great sounding advice for Jeff and we’ll continue to use him that way.”

UCF (4-2) plays Rice on Saturday.
