Virginia Tech joined Florida State this week as the ACC’s bowl-eligible teams, and both of them are leading their respective divisions with undefeated league records. So why, some of you have asked, do I have the Hokies in the Orange Bowl when I’ve got the Seminoles at the top of the power rankings?
Well, haven’t you ever heard of an upset? Florida State has the more favorable schedule and the better chance at running the table. The Seminoles should be ranked higher if and when those two teams meet in the ACC championship game. FSU should also be ranked higher because it lost to a top 10 team on the road -- not an FCS team at home -- and only has one overall loss. But the Hokies play their best when it matters most -- in November.
Here’s a look at this week’s bowl projections:
Orange Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. BCS
Chick-fil-A Bowl: Florida State vs. SEC
Champs Sports Bowl: Clemson vs. Big East
Hyundai Sun Bowl: Miami vs. Pac-10
Meineke Car Care Bowl: NC State vs. Big East
Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. SEC
Advocate V100 Independence Bowl: North Carolina vs. Mountain West
Eagle Bank Bowl: Maryland vs. Conference USA
