It's Tuesday, or Newsday in the Big Ten, and I have some quarterback updates for you.
PENN STATE
Sophomore Matt McGloin and freshman Rob Bolden will compete this week in practice to see who starts Saturday against Northwestern.
McGloin led Penn State to a 41-31 win against Michigan last Saturday in his first career start, completing 17 of 28 passes for 250 yards with a touchdown and no interception. Bolden, who started Penn State's first seven games before sustaining an apparent concussion Oct. 23 at Minnesota, is cleared to play and felt good after Monday's practice, according to coach Joe Paterno.
Although Bolden could have played against Michigan, Paterno didn't feel comfortable using him. After the game, quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno said, "It's Rob Bolden's job," but the elder Paterno was non-committal.
We might even see both quarterbacks Saturday against the Wildcats.
"Sometimes it’s just a gut feeling when you get two kids as even as these two are," Joe Paterno said. "I've been a one-quarterback guy, you go into a ballgame and you stick with him. But every once in a while, you've got to start to say, 'Hey, maybe I'd be better off if we went with two.' It may be a decision where we can't make up our mind and we end up playing both of them."
My take: Start McGloin. He has been on the field for the end of the past two games, both Nittany Lions wins, and he's gaining confidence with each week. I was impressed with McGloin's arm and his poise against Michigan, and Northwestern is vulnerable in the secondary despite a better performance last week at Indiana.
PURDUE
It looks like Purdue will be starting its third quarterback of the season Saturday against No. 9 Wisconsin.
Sean Robinson is No. 1 on this week's depth chart, and the Boilermakers are preparing as if the true freshman will start Saturday. Redshirt freshman Rob Henry started last week against Illinois, but his hand injury prevented him from doing much at all as Robinson played almost the entire game.
The laceration on Henry's throwing hand, suffered Oct. 23 at Ohio State, gave him more discomfort against Illinois than Purdue had envisioned.
"The situation's the same; [Henry] still has the same injury with the same amount of discomfort," Purdue coach Danny Hope said. "So with that in mind, rather than assume that he might be able to play on Saturday, we're assuming that he’s not. If he can, that's gravy, but we'll get Sean Robinson ready to go."
Purdue continues to be snake bit by injuries, and you have to feel for Hope and his players. At least Robinson will have a full week to prepare as the starter before facing the Badgers.
"We've had some legitimate reasons for things to be difficult," Hope said of the injuries. "But you can't allow those to be excuses for your team."
INDIANA
Starting quarterback Ben Chappell showed up to Monday's news conference wearing a walking boot on his left foot, raising some concern about his health for this week's game against No. 16 Iowa.
Although Chappell took several big hits in Saturday's loss to Northwestern, the Big Ten's top passer should be fine for the Iowa game.
"He's a little banged up," Hoosiers coach Bill Lynch said Tuesday. "We're going to hold him out of practice today just to let him heal up a little bit. ... He'll be in good shape by Saturday."
Indiana certainly needs Chappell to have any chance against Iowa, which will be coming after him hard with a talented defensive line.
