COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland students, dressed for the "blackout," began to file into their seats about 90 minutes before kickoff. There's finally something for them to cheer about here in Byrd Stadium. With a win over Florida State Saturday night the Terps would play NC State next week for the Atlantic Division title.
Coach Ralph Friedgen said he is hoping for a championship atmosphere, but in typical College Park fashion, it could take a while for this stadium to fill up. DC/beltway traffic is usually worse than Maryland game-day traffic, and there was plenty of parking still available two hours before kickoff. Still, Maryland is 4-0 at home this season, and there's a lot on the line for both teams, so it should eventually fill up.
It's not uncomfortably cold, at least not now, so weather shouldn't be too much of a factor.
A key matchup to watch Saturday is the Terps' offensive line against FSU's defensive line. Maryland has allowed just seven sacks in their six ACC games, which is the fewest in the league, and FSU excels at pressuring quarterbacks.
Hopefully this will be a great game, but the NC State-Carolina game from earlier will be tough to top.
