Boise State fans can breathe again. Coach Chris Petersen has decided to stay with the Broncos, spurning a potential opportunity to go to Stanford.

Of course, you have to wonder whether Boise State fans were worried that Petersen would leave. His name comes up annually during the coaching rumor mill, and annually there is not much to any of the speculation. This time around, Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby reportedly asked for permission to speak with Petersen, but it is unclear how far those talks went.

Petersen has always maintained how happy he is at Boise State, a program he has taken to two BCS games and a Top 2 ranking this season. He is an astounding 61-5 in five seasons, and there is no question he is the heart and soul of that program. The question always has been whether Petersen would leave Boise. We are still left to wonder whether he will one day leave for another opportunity.

Perhaps Petersen wants to see how his program succeeds in the Mountain West and whether that conference can become an automatic qualifier before he takes another opportunity. Or maybe he will never leave. Either way, Boise State is in good shape with Petersen at the helm.

Also Monday, Petersen officially announced that Brent Pease decided to return to the school as offensive coordinator. Pease had spent the past five seasons as receivers coach but left to be offensive coordinator for Indiana. He came back when Bryan Harsin left for Texas last week. Petersen also hired Robert Prince as receivers coach.
