San Diego State reportedly will promote defensive coordinator Rocky Long to head coach, replacing the departed Brady Hoke.
The school has called an afternoon news conference but had no comment. Long's agent told The San Diego Union-Tribune that Long would be tabbed as the head coach.
Hiring Long makes perfect sense. He helped Hoke rebuild San Diego State into a respectable team, coming to the Aztecs after serving as head coach at New Mexico for 11 seasons. The Aztecs went 9-4 this past season, the best record in school history, and Long is expected to keep the same continuity going for the program. Hiring him quickly obviously helps with recruiting as well. He knows all of the personnel and has a track record of winning with the Lobos. As I said Tuesday, if he can win there with the limited resources, then he can definitely win at San Diego State.
He will have to replace offensive coordinator Al Borges, who is reportedly headed to Michigan with Hoke. But Aztecs fans should trust Long to do a good job with the program. Good move for San Diego State. I will have more following the afternoon news conference.
