It's going to be a very busy weekend in the Big East, as five of the eight league clubs will hold their spring games on either Friday or Saturday. Here's a rundown of what's in store.
Cincinnati
"Bearcat Bowl V" will be held Saturday night at Nippert Stadium. It's the highlight of several fan activities that day, but it won't be the traditional end-of-spring event for the football team, which will continue practicing for another week.
Butch Jones will put his team through different situations, and then show off some one-on-one battles like a receiver versus a defensive back.
Connecticut
The annual Blue-White game will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Rentschler Field.
Matt DeGennaro and Mike Rembish, who served as captains of the 1990 team, will serve as honorary coaches for the White team, while 2003 team members Sean Mulcahy and Uyi Osunde will do so for the Blue team. Fans will be most interested in actual coach Paul Pasqualoni and how his team will look different from Randy Edsall's Huskies.
The team will play 15 minute quarters in the first half, and two 20 minute quarters with running time in the second half.
Louisville
The Cardinals have been so thinned by injuries this spring that their Thursday spring practice began at 5:30 a.m. because a few offensive linemen had afternoon classes. Charlie Strong couldn't practice without them.
So it will simply be offense versus defense at Louisville's spring game Friday night at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, because there just aren't enough bodies to split up teams. The good news is, all of the injured players are expected back for fall camp.
Pittsburgh
The Panthers' Blue-Gold game will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Heinz Field. It will be the first chance for most fans to check out new coach Todd Graham and his high-paced offense.
The team will be divided in half, with the starters playing the backups in a full situational scrimmage.
Syracuse
For the first time in several years, the Orange will hold an actual game with offense and defense split into separate teams. Doug Marrone feels like he finally has the depth to do that for the spring game. Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will coach one team, while defensive coordinator Scott Shafer will call the shots for the other one.
The game will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Carrier Dome.
