SOUTH BEND, Ind. —This just in from Notre Dame athletics:
University of Notre Dame sophomore outside linebacker Prince Shembo left the team Friday afternoon to tend to a family medical emergency and will not be at the game today. It is not known when he will return to the team. Freshman Troy Niklas will start in Shembo’s place vs. Michigan State and senior Steve Filer will back up Niklas.

Niklas, at 6-foot-6 1/2 and 250 pounds, will be making his first career start. Here's hoping everything is OK with the Shembo family.

In other news, members of the 1966 Notre Dame national title team were just on the field before the game, celebrating their 45th reunion. Also, Ethan Johnson is the Fighting Irish's game captain, joining season captain Harrison Smith for the coin toss.

Keep it here throughout the afternoon as we get ready for kickoff in a few minutes.
