Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert underwent shoulder surgery Tuesday morning and is out for the remainder of the season, the school announced Tuesday.

Gilbert suffered the injury in the season opener against Rice, and the symptoms got progressively worse.

He was benched midway through Texas' win over BYU the following week after completing 2 of 8 passes for eight yards and two interceptions.

"My shoulder was getting progressively worse and when the doctors did an MRI last week, their recommendation was for me to get it fixed," Gilbert said in a release. "That's why I decided to have the surgery now, so I can get it taken care of, start my rehab and be healthy and ready to go for next year."

Gilbert obviously had his struggles, but this is still a big surprise. Texas is off this week, so its normal media availability was canceled on Monday, but rumors of the injury hadn't surfaced before Tuesday's surprising announcement.

Gilbert, a native of Austin, Texas, threw for 2,744 yards, 10 touchdowns and 17 interceptions during the Longhorns' 5-7 season in 2010. Through two-plus games in 2011, he had completed 15-of-31 passes for 247 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.
