CLEMSON, S.C. -- FSU backup quarterback Clint Trickett will start for Florida State in place of injured starter EJ Manuel, a school spokesman confirmed. The Seminoles had planned to see how Manuel performed in warm-ups here, but he did not warm up. He is currently getting treatment. Manuel did not practice at all this week, so this shouldn't come as a huge surprise, but Florida State -- during the Christian Ponder era -- was known for Ponder not practicing and then appearing in the starting lineup on game day.
Trickett proved capable last weekend against Oklahoma, but this is a different test. It's a road trip against a nationally ranked Atlantic Division opponent. Is he ready for it? We'll find out. Clemson's defense hasn't exactly dominated this season, but the Tigers could do themselves a favor by putting pressure on the rookie and forcing him into some mistakes. On the flip side, FSU's offensive line has to do a much better job of protecting the lanky Trickett than it did last weekend when he was sacked five times.
