Baylor's own RG3 is holding down the No. 1 spot in the Big 12 among Heisman contenders after continuing his tear against Rice, despite the best efforts of one enterprising assistant coach. More on Griffin later today.
Let's take a look at how the Big 12's Heisman candidates might look if voting took place today.
1. Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
Last week: 29-33, 338 yards, 5 TD in a 56-31 win over Rice.
Making the case for Griffin: Griffin is continuing his tear through nonconference play with his second consecutive game with more touchdowns than incompletions. Nobody in the Big 12 is playing better right now, but another test awaits this week with a road game at Kansas State and the Wildcats' much-improved defense from a year ago.
2. Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
Last week: 35-48, 448 yards, 3 TDs in a 38-28 win over Missouri.
Making the case for Jones: Jones' team around him gives him the best chance for longevity in this race, but he hasn't been as good as Griffin so far this year. The Sooners wrap up nonconference play this week with what should be a laugher against Ball State in Norman on Saturday before facing off against Texas in the Cotton Bowl next week.
3. Brandon Weeden, QB, Oklahoma State
Last week: 47-60, 438 yards, 2 TDs in a 30-29 win over Texas A&M.
Making the case for Weeden: About those interceptions you were saying? Weeden threw six in his first three games, but when the Cowboys needed him to be sharp, he was. He had no turnovers and was the biggest force behind OSU's second-half comeback in College Station.
4. Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
Last week: 13 rec, 154 yards, 3 TDs in a 38-28 win over Missouri.
Making the case for Broyles: Broyles was ill and didn't have a huge game against Florida State, but he's topped 13 catches and 150 yards in both of his other outings this year. Not bad.
5. Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
Last week: 11 rec, 121 yards, TD in a 30-29 win over Texas A&M.
Making the case for Blackmon: Blackmon's a good receiver, but even he is within the reach of the dark force, Squinky. His unbelievable gaffe aside, he's fortunate this iteration of the OSU Cowboys looks good enough to overcome some of those mistakes, and Blackmon is one of the biggest reasons. An outstanding day for any other receiver is now an average one for Blackmon.
Finally, here's what my ballot looked like in ESPN's weekly Heisman Watch:
1. Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
2. Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
3. Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina
4. Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State
5. Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
