The first-ever college football game in the new Yankee Stadium will be held Nov. 20, 2010, and will feature Notre Dame versus Army.

The game was officially announced Monday at a news conference at the stadium, confirming weekend reports.

Irish coach Charlie Weis called the announcement "a special moment for me." He recalled going to Yankees and New York Giants games as a kid at the old stadium, which closed last season. Weis said he approached George Steinbrenner two years ago while attending spring training and proposed the idea of an Army-Notre Dame game when the new stadium opened.

Army and Notre Dame played at the old Yankee Stadium nearly every year from 1925-1946, when they were often two of the most powerful teams in the country.

Army coach Rich Ellerson said the game will provide a terrific showcase opportunity for his program, but that the Black Knights need to improve and perform well. He said that having such an historic game return to Yankee Stadium in modern times would be special.

"I think people will find this reassuring," Ellerson said. "We're thrilled to be a part of it."

Army is likely to hold more games in Yankee Stadium in the next few years, with Rutgers and Syracuse as possible opponents. No future games have yet been announced.

Weis said he was under the impression that the game would be considered a home contest for the Irish, but no ticket or revenue-distribution information was given out.

The location is sure to bring plenty of attention to a series that otherwise had faded out of the spotlight. Who wouldn't want to be there or at least see the game on TV just out of sheer curiosity?

It's also part of Notre Dame's larger strategy going forward of playing at neutral sites to boost exposure. The Irish will play Washington State in San Antonio this season. They also have talked about or scheduled games in New Orleans; Arlington, Texas; Foxboro, Mass.; and East Rutherford, N.J. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Tony Barnhart reported today that Atlanta is trying to woo the Irish for a game in the Georgia Dome, possibly against Georgia Tech or Alabama.
