San Diego State’s season opener against UCLA could be on a three-month hiatus.

Wildfires in the area are causing poor air quality, which has sparked concern over the players' health.

A story in the North County Times said if the game were rescheduled, it might not be played until Dec. 5, the first off Saturday for both teams.

"They've got an air monitoring device at the Rose Bowl that's watching everything," San Diego State athletic director Jeff Schemmel told the paper. "The concern is more the air than it is the fire.

"[UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero] said they had a little rain even this morning, so they're encouraged by the weather, and the fire's going the other direction.

"Right now, everything's on go."

The decision on whether to play the game will rest on Guerrero and currently there is no timetable for an announcement.

San Diego State coach Brady Hoke said Tuesday that his team was undeterred by the air quality and would prepare for the game as usual.
