1. Randy Shannon has been nothing if not patient with his young players in his three seasons as head coach at Miami. That patience paid off Monday night in the thrilling 38-34 victory at Florida State. What impressed him the most? Maturity. “They did a really nice job of not quitting,” Shannon said Tuesday of the Hurricanes. “They had opportunities to do it and they didn’t.” Miami had lost seven of its last eight ACC games against ranked opponents.

2. UCLA goes to Tennessee on Friday, and don’t forget the history of Vols coach Lane Kiffin and Bruins offensive coordinator Norm Chow. Kiffin worked under Chow on the USC staff from 2001-2004. USC coach Pete Carroll, in a bid to rehire former assistant Steve Sarkisian from the Oakland Raiders, promised to promote Kiffin and make the two good friends co-offensive coordinators. Chow, stripped of his play-calling duties after a national championship season, left for the NFL. I’m guessing Chow would like to win this one.

3. Players don’t hit during August as much as they once did. Blame NCAA rules and smaller rosters. As Tulane coach Bob Toledo, an old-school guy, said Tuesday in the wake of the Green Wave’s loss to Tulsa, 37-13, “I saw bad tackling in a lot of games this past weekend. And that stems from not being able to do it….It’s a double-edged sword. If you practice them and scrimmage them and they get hurt you’re a dummy. If you don’t practice them and they don’t play well then you’re a dummy.” Tulane will try to tackle BYU this week.
