SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The one-game suspension is over, so yes, Tommy Rees could take the field Saturday against Purdue.

But any appearance from Rees would have to come after Everett Golson, and whether it were to come before Andrew Hendrix -- listed as the co-No. 2 signal caller on this week's depth chart -- remains to be seen.

"I mean, I think both of them have to get some work," coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday. "But Tommy probably needs the most work at this time. So you know, we'll continue. Both those guys will share reps. But it will be, for me, probably more about making sure that we get Tommy up to a level where he can be sharp if he's in a position where he had to go into the game, and I don't know if he's got enough work yet. So he'll get work at 2 as well as Andrew and then we'll see how that progresses during the week."

Kelly said he hasn't pegged one as the next man in yet should something go wrong Saturday with Golson.

Rees, 12-4 as a starter but suspended for the opener following his spring arrest at an off-campus party, took part in only individual drills during camp while Golson and Hendrix fought for the top spot. Kelly said he saw enough of where Rees developed since the spring to feel comfortable with the junior competing for the back-up spot.

Golson and Hendrix raved throughout camp about Rees' willingness to engage and help despite being sidelined, a trait Kelly echoed Tuesday.

"A young man who really handled himself very well in a very tough, tough set of circumstances," Kelly said. "I think we all know that. He was a great teammate, that's all I would tell you. He was a great teammate. He handled himself the right way."

Movin' on up: Notre Dame's 50-10 win over Navy put the Irish at No. 22 in both the AP and the USA Today coaches' polls. They had been unranked in the preseason AP poll and were 24th in the preseason coaches' poll.
