This was not the kind of down-to-the-wire game FSU fans want to see. Not against Jacksonville State. Florida State waited until late in the fourth quarter to make a push for a 19-9 come-from-behind win (yes, that's right, they had to claw back) and missed two extra points in the process.
Florida State escaped what would have been the ACC's third embarrassing loss to an FCS school -- a team Georgia Tech handled easily last weekend -- but has plenty to be concerned about heading into next weekend's game against BYU. Weaknesses in all three phases of the game were exposed, not to mention the intangibles -- the want to win, the sense of urgency, not playing down to an opponent or looking ahead.
Florida State did not look like a team capable of contending for the Atlantic Divsion today, let alone anything else. In fact, after watching Clemson on Thursday night it doesn't look like the Noles could hang with them, either, with they way they played today.
FSU's counterparts in the Atlantic Divison -- save for Maryland -- all showed improvement. NC State came out and completely dominated in a convincing win over Murray State, BC racked up the points against Kent State, Wake Forest battled back against Stanford and Clemson played well despite the loss to Georgia Tech.
Florida State won today, and on their record, that's what matters most. But that kind of effort won't add up to many more wins, starting next weekend against BYU.
