USF has hired Ron Cooper to coach the secondary, the school announced Friday.
Cooper spent last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he served as defensive backs coach. Before that, he spent three seasons as LSU’s secondary coach, where he mentored some of the top players in the nation. Cornerbacks Morris Claiborne and Patrick Peterson each won the Thorpe Award, while cornerback Tyrann Mathieu was a finalist for the Heisman in 2011.
“Ron Cooper is a valuable addition to our staff,” coach Willie Taggart said in a statement. “His experience will be a huge asset in his role as assistant head coach. In addition, he has recently worked with some of the top secondaries and defensive backs in college football, which will serve us greatly both on the field and in recruiting.”
Cooper also has been a head coach at Eastern Michigan, Louisville and Alabama A&M.
