Case Keenum spent most of his Sunday in bed recovering from Saturday’s 29-28 come-from-behind win over Texas Tech, but when he finally emerged to get take-out for himself and his girlfriend, he realized that the Cougars’ win hadn’t changed the city much.

After rewatching Saturday's come-from-behind win, Case Keenum knows the Cougars still have plenty to work on.
“No one recognized me,” Keenum said of going into the restaurant. “You gotta love it, it’s still Houston and it’s still 4 million people here. We may have won over a couple hundred thousand, but there are still some people out there that don’t care. That’s fine. We love it.

“It was awesome to see that we had some fans and that’s how it needs to be. We need to keep people coming, keep putting on a show and keep people excited about Houston football.”

Keenum led Houston from a 21-10 deficit to a win on Saturday and helped the Cougars jump to No. 11 in the Associated Press poll. But the fact that Keenum and his teammates play in a city with several professional sports teams helps keep them pretty level-headed despite beating two automatic-qualifying teams for the first time since 1999.

Keenum said he watched the game on Sunday and acknowledged that Houston is a long way from being perfect. He noted that through the first half, he and his teammates played with jitters, which contributed to falling behind at halftime. It wasn't until the second half that they started embracing the atmosphere and opportunity and started having fun.

But Keenum, who teammates say is the most level-headed player in the locker room, isn’t ready to anoint the Cougars as the best nonautomatic-qualifying team. He's the first to point out that its just three games and that he's seen several teams have great nonconference seasons only to lose their conference opener.

And Houston's season doesn’t get any easier from here. Houston is on the road at UTEP, Mississippi State and Tulane in the next three weeks.

The trip to UTEP should be interesting since the teams play a similar style of offense. Houston has won the past three meetings with the Miners, but the last two have been decided by 5 and 3 points, respectively.

“This is going to be a big week for us,” Keenum said. “UTEP has always played us pretty well. They’re a team that’s hard to go play down there at UTEP. They’ve got a really good stadium down there, a cool atmosphere, and that’s going to be a big test. We’re 0-0 in conference and our goal is to win the West and that comes with keeping level headed and taking it one game at a time. We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves.”
