The BCS standings have a new member this week: Duke football has finally cracked the code.
That Florida State is just two games away from playing for a national title and still No. 2 in the country in the latest BCS standings is now old news. That Clemson is No. 6 heading into its regular-season finale against No. 10 South Carolina means little more than this will be the first time those rivals play as top 10 teams. The story this week is No. 24-ranked Duke, which made its first appearance in the BCS standings -- one spot ahead of storied Notre Dame.
It has been milestone after milestone this season for the Blue Devils, who were picked by the media in July to finish last in the Coastal Division. On Saturday, they’ll face North Carolina in a game that could send them to the ACC championship game should the Blue Devils win. Duke is 9-2, undefeated on the road, and hasn’t lost since Sept. 21. The program has won seven straight games, earned at least a share of the Coastal Division title, and has won a school record-tying nine games for the first time since 1941.
Now Duke can add its first appearance in the BCS standings to its list of accomplishments this fall.
