Akron hires Mallory as new DC

By Graham Watson

Illinois assistant coach Curt Mallory didn’t get the Central Michigan head coaching position, so he moved on to the next Mid-American Conference school.

Mallory told IlliniHQ.com he has accepted a position as Akron’s defensive coordinator under new head coach Rob Ianello.

Mallory has spent five seasons with the Illini, but was recently demoted from his defensive coordinator position by coach Ron Zook. Mallory was expected to stay with the Illini as a position coach.

Mallory has MAC coaching experience working with both Central Michigan and Ball State.

Mallory was one of three finalists for the Central Michigan head coaching job, which was given to Michigan State running backs coach Dan Enos.
