West Virginia holds off Louisville
By Brian Bennett
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Think next week's Backyard Brawl might be a little interesting?
West Virginia stayed alive in the Big East race with a 17-10 win at Louisville. It was a dominant defensive performance by the Mountaineers, who pitched a second-half shutout and completely stymied the Cardinals' powerful running game.
The Mountaineers only managed a field goal in the second half themselves, but that was more than enough with the way their defense controlled the action.
West Virginia improved to 7-3 and 3-2 in the Big East and can tie for first place by winning at Pittsburgh next week. Louisville must win at Rutgers in the season finale to reach bowl eligibility.
