NIU QB DeMarcus Grady joins hoops team
By Andrea Adelson
Northern Illinois backup quarterback DeMarcus Grady has joined the Huskies basketball team for the remainder of the season.
Grady was at practice Monday, less than 30 hours after returning from the Huskies' 40-17 victory over Fresno State in the uDrove Humanitarian Bowl.
The 6-foot-1, 203-pound junior was an honorable mention all-state basketball player in Michigan during his prep days at East Grand Rapids. He has thought about playing both sports since his freshman year. But Grady acted on his impulse this season, and got permission from new football coach Dave Doeren and interim coach Tom Matukewicz.
"It’s always something that has stayed in my mind," Grady said in an NIU news release. "I think there are some things I can bring from football as far as the success we had this year and how we got where we did, that can help the [basketball] team.”
Grady has to work himself into basketball shape, but he will be with the team for Wednesday’s game against Southern Illinois.
"We’ll know more about what he can bring on the court as we get into the conference season,” basketball coach Ricardo Patton said.
Grady will return to the football team when basketball season ends.
