SEC in the headlines: Spikes latest Gator hobbled

Posted by ESPN.com's Chris Low

It's now two days and counting until South Carolina and Vanderbilt open the season for SEC teams with Thursday night games. Here's a rundown on some of what's going on around the league:

* With all eyes on Percy Harvin and his heel injury, Florida coach Urban Meyer isn't sure if middle linebacker Brandon Spikes will be able to play Saturday against Hawaii after injuring his foot.

* South Carolina's Steve Spurrier names a surprise starter at tailback for the opener against North Carolina State.

* Bryan Mullen of The Tennessean has a sobering look at all the hard luck Tennessee fullback David Holbert has experienced during his injury-plagued career.

* Vanderbilt's Bobby Johnson is staying mum on who his starting quarterback will be Thursday against Miami (Ohio). I'll go out on a limb and say Chris Nickson will take the first snap, although based on my conversation with Johnson last week, I think he's comfortable with both Nickson and Mackenzi Adams.

* The Bulldogs take the green jerseys off tailbacks Knowshon Moreno and Caleb King and get in a little live hitting.

* LSU and Appalachian State will make history on Saturday in a game that was originally scheduled to be played last season. LSU, though, opted to shuffle things and instead played Mississippi State on Thursday night, forcing Appalachian State to find another opener. The Mountaineers did ... against Michigan.

* Carlton Salters will get his chance to help the Arkansas offense after playing a different kind of role at receiver the last few years.
