Illinois hires Toledo's Beckman as coach

By Adam Rittenberg

Illinois has tabbed Toledo's Tim Beckman as its next head football coach, the Associated Press and other outlets are reporting.

The school hasn't confirmed Beckman's hiring, although a news conference is expected at 4 p.m. ET to introduce him as Fighting Illini coach. Beckman met early this morning with Toledo players and informed them he had accepted the Illinois post.

Beckman, a former Ohio State assistant, went 21-16 in three seasons at Toledo and led the Rockets to an 8-4 mark and a Military Bowl appearance this season. Beckman coached cornerbacks at Ohio State from 2005-06 and then served as Oklahoma State's defensive coordinator before taking the Toledo job.

Illinois reportedly targeted Houston's Kevin Sumlin earlier in the week but didn't strike a deal. First-year athletic director Mike Thomas also expressed interest in two other MAC coaches, Eastern Michigan's Ron English and Temple's Steve Addazio, as well as Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst.

More to come after Beckman's hiring becomes official.
