Brown razor sharp, defense shaky for WVU
Posted by ESPN.com's Brian Bennett
Nothing to worry about so far in the transition from Pat White to Jarrett Brown. But what's up with West Virginia's supposedly vaunted defense?
The Mountaineers were tied 10-10 with Liberty in the second quarter and the defense gave up over 100 yards passing in the first half to the FCS Flames.
But luckily the offense picked up the slack, especially Brown. The fifth-year senior is 15 of 19 for 192 yards at halftime and has run it for 40 yards and a score. Sure, it's only Liberty, but that's a smashing debut for the guy who waited behind White for three years.
Noel Devine has 61 yards rushing, as the Brown-Devine combo seems to be working about as well as White-Devine did. Another encouraging sign is that new kicker Tyler Bitancurt made three field goals, including a 45-yarder.
But West Virginia's kickoff coverage, which was so horrible last year, apparently hasn't gotten much better. The Flames have two returns of more than 45 yards already.
